Old Doc Yak

Sidney Smith's *Old Doc Yak* strips exemplify the visual innovation of early newspaper comics. The six-panel sequence uses consistent character design, sequential panel flow, and speech balloons to tell a complete joke: a patient with foot trouble visits the goat doctor, who subjects him to increasingly absurd treatments. Smith's loose pen style and economical draftsmanship were hallmarks of the newspaper Sunday page format that preceded comic books. These strips, distributed nationally through syndicates, established recurring characters and comedic timing through images and text—the foundational grammar that shaped all comics to follow.
