Old Doc Yak
· March 16, 1912

A Sunday newspaper comic strip featuring Old Doc Yak, a recurring animal character engaged in a money scheme with a smaller companion. The six-panel strip demonstrates the visual conventions emerging in early comics: sequential panels with speech balloons advancing a narrative, anthropomorphic characters, slapstick humor, and physical comedy. The strip's layout and pacing—moving from setup through escalating complications to punchline—exemplifies the storytelling techniques newspapers pioneered as comics evolved from single-panel cartoons into continuous narratives. Animal comics were popular in this era, offering artists freedom to exaggerate movement and expression while entertaining diverse newspaper audiences.
