Old Doc Yak
· April 4, 1912

This newspaper strip follows Doc Yak's misadventure with a knock on the door—a classic setup for physical comedy. The six-panel sequence uses sequential art to build narrative momentum: character reaction, escalating complication, and punchline. Speech balloons carry exposition and dialogue while the drawings convey action and emotion. Old Doc Yak was among the early recurring-character strips that appeared daily and Sunday in newspapers, establishing visual conventions that would define comic strips and later comic books. The simple ink line-work and expressive cartooning exemplify the drawing style that emerged from newspaper illustration at the turn of the twentieth century.
