Old Doc Yak Collects His Bill
This Sunday page follows Old Doc Yak, a cantankerous goat character, as he pursues a deadbeat customer across the countryside. The strip uses rapid-fire slapstick: the doctor's vehicle launches skyward, tangles with a lasso, crashes into a cactus, and careens through various disasters. Each panel advances the chase through sequential art, with speech balloons delivering punchlines and character reactions. The strip exemplifies early newspaper comics' reliance on physical comedy and recurring characters to drive narrative. By 1912, Sunday pages like this had established core vocabulary—panel grids, sight gags synchronized to dialogue, and anthropomorphic animals as protagonists—that would become foundational to the emerging comic book medium.
