Old Doc Yak Pays His Bill
· June 30, 1912

This Sunday comic strip follows Old Doc Yak, a cantankerous goat character, through a series of misadventures involving payment of a bill. The strip demonstrates the visual conventions that shaped early American comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring anthropomorphic characters, and escalating physical comedy. The narrative unfolds through nine panels arranged in a grid, moving from dialogue to slapstick action—the protagonist tumbling through water, negotiating with creditors, and ultimately fleeing his obligations. The drawing style employs bold blacks and fluid linework typical of newspaper comic strips of the 1910s, when Sunday pages served as laboratories for the visual grammar that would define the medium for decades.
