Old Doc Yak
This Sunday page strips follows Old Doc Yak, a bearded goat character whose schemes repeatedly backfire. The narrative unfolds across nine panels with consistent speech balloons and sequential storytelling—conventions that defined newspaper comic strips in the early 1900s. Here, Doc Yak pursues ducks and fish for dinner, only to be outwitted and beaten by his quarry. The artist employs varied panel sizes and sight gags relying on physical comedy and animal behavior. Old Doc Yak exemplifies the visual vocabulary emerging from newspaper comics: recurring characters, episodic plots, and expressive line work that made strips a mass medium preceding the comic book industry.
