Old Doc Yak
This Sunday strip follows Doc Yak, a goat character, through a day of escalating mishaps. Each panel advances the narrative through sequential action: mechanical trouble with his car, a visit to a barber that goes awry, birds disrupting a window auction, an encounter with a nickel, and a final scene at night. The strip employs the visual conventions that defined early newspaper comics—multiple panels arranged left to right, speech balloons, expressive line work, and recurring characters. By 1912, such strips populated Sunday pages nationwide, establishing the grammar later adapted into comic books. Doc Yak's slapstick humor and dependence on visual gags over dialogue typified the era's approach to sequential storytelling in the popular press.
