Old Doc Yak
· September 13, 1912

This Sunday strip follows Old Doc Yak, a recurring character navigating schemes and mishaps across six sequential panels. The narrative flows left to right through his attempt to accumulate counterfeit currency—each panel advances the plot via dialogue balloons and sight gags typical of early comic strip vocabulary. The artist employs cross-hatching and bold linework characteristic of 1910s newspaper illustration. Doc Yak exemplifies the Sunday funny pages' role as testing ground for visual storytelling: recurring characters, panel-to-panel continuity, and speech balloons became standard vocabulary for comics. These newspaper strips directly preceded the comic book format, establishing the medium's fundamental language of sequential art.
