Old Doc Yak
· April 20, 1913

A Sunday newspaper comic strip featuring Doc Yak, an anthropomorphic goat in bowler hat and suit, and his companions in a slapstick sequence. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary of early comics: sequential panels advancing a narrative, speech balloons for dialogue, sound effects ("BAM!", "CHUG CHUG"), and exaggerated action poses. Characters operate a cannon and motorcycle in escalating chaos, culminating in collision and pursuit. The crisp black-and-white linework and character-driven humor typify the newspaper comic strips that established the medium's formal grammar and entertained mass audiences in the 1910s.
