Old Doc Yak
This Sunday page strips down to its essentials: a recurring cast of animal characters, a simple narrative arc, and comedy that turns on slapstick and verbal gags. Doc Yak operates a small economy—friends borrowing money, schemes to profit from a used car, a bicycle deal gone wrong. The artist uses sequential panels with speech balloons to move the action forward, techniques that newspapers had been perfecting since the 1890s. By 1916, the Sunday comic page was a standardized feature of American papers, establishing the visual grammar that would migrate into comic books a generation later.
