Old Doc Yak
· April 2, 1916

This Sunday strip follows Old Doc Yak and his young ward through a lesson in portraiture and artistic ambition. The narrative unfolds across nine panels: a teacher scolds the boy for his poor report card, the ward boasts he'll become a great artist, and Doc Yak attempts to paint him as proof. When the boy sneaks away mid-sitting, Doc and his companion pursue him, leading to physical comedy and a climactic encounter with a cat. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary that defined early newspaper comics—sequential panels advancing plot, speech balloons carrying dialogue, and recurring characters in episodic situations. The loose, expressive linework and slapstick humor were hallmarks of the Sunday funnies that preceded the modern comic book.
