Old Doc Yak: Piano Mover
This Sunday strip by Sidney Smith follows Doc Yak and a helper as they attempt to move a piano up a steep ramp. The humor unfolds through physical comedy and wordplay across twelve panels: a prospective customer arrives, negotiations stall over the fee, the piano gets stuck, and complications multiply. Smith's panel layout and sequential staging establish clear cause-and-effect narrative, while recurring characters and their personalities drive the gags. By the 1910s, newspaper comics had crystallized the visual vocabulary—speech balloons, expressive figures, tight panel grids—that would define the medium. Artists like Smith refined timing and spatial storytelling, turning the Sunday page into a laboratory for comedic timing that later shaped comic books themselves.
