Old Doc Yak and Little Yotch
This Sunday strip features Old Doc Yak, a gruff animal character, and his small companion Yotch in a domestic comedy of discipline and mischief. The six-panel grid demonstrates the emerging visual language of newspaper comics: sequential storytelling through repeated characters, dialogue balloons, and expressive body language. Doc Yak scolds the boy for disobedience, threatens punishment, then relents—a familiar domestic conflict played for humor through exaggeration and slapstick timing. The strip's panel layout, speech integration, and character consistency typify the formal vocabulary that newspaper comics inherited from earlier illustrated narratives and developed into the foundation of American comic book art.
