Old Opie Dilldock's Stories
This Sunday strip follows Santa Claus and a cast of children through seasonal narratives rendered in the visual language that newspaper comics were perfecting in the early 1900s. Sequential panels with speech balloons advance a linear story; the artist uses varied panel sizes and compositions to control pacing. The grotesque character design—exaggerated features, heavy line work—was typical of the era's comic idiom. By 1907, Sunday newspaper comics had established the formal vocabulary that would define the medium: recurring characters, dialogue integration, and visual storytelling across a full page layout. Such strips were the direct ancestors of the comic book format that emerged in the 1930s.
