Old Opie Dilldock's Stories
This Sunday newspaper comic strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary that emerged in early-twentieth-century comics: multiple panels arranged in grid sequence, speech balloons carrying dialogue and narration, and a recurring cast of characters in episodic adventure. The strip's narrative unfolds across eight panels, combining sight gags with sequential storytelling. The artist employs exaggerated expressions and caricatured figures typical of the era's illustrative style. Such strips appeared in major newspapers' Sunday editions and became prototypes for the comic book format that followed. The interplay of image and text—panels advancing the plot, captions providing exposition—established conventions that comic artists would refine and codify throughout the twentieth century.
