Old Opie Dilldock's Stories
This Sunday strip narrative follows Old Opie Dilldock through an Arctic expedition in seven sequential panels. The artist employs the visual language developing in early newspaper comics: panels arranged in grid form, narrative captions anchoring each scene, and exaggerated character expressions. The protagonist and his companion encounter polar hazards—icebergs, crevasses, and seal hunts—rendered in detailed cross-hatching typical of wood-engraved newspaper illustration. The strip exemplifies how adventure serials migrated from text-based storytelling to the sequential image format that would define the emerging comic strip medium.
