Old Opie Dilldock's Stories
· August 22, 1909

A Sunday comic strip featuring Old Opie Dilldock recounting a tall tale of fishing misadventures. The eight-panel sequence follows the protagonist's exaggerated account of enormous fish, narrow escapes, and comic struggle in the water. The strip employs the standard visual conventions of early newspaper comics: sequential panels with detailed cross-hatched illustrations, hand-lettered speech balloons, and recurring character types. Published during the formative years when Sunday newspaper supplements established the visual language that would define comic strips—panel borders, spatial progression, and expressive caricature—this strip exemplifies how mass-circulation newspapers became the primary medium for sequential narrative art in America, preceding the comic book by decades.
