Wunst Upon a Time
This strip exemplifies the visual storytelling conventions that emerged in early newspaper comics. The narrative unfolds through six panels with speech balloons and sequential action: a character in costume tells a story about a fish seeking social advancement through strategic introductions. The cast—a witch-like figure, fish, owl, duck, and other animals—interact across panels linked by dialogue and cause-and-effect. The artist employs exaggerated character design and anthropomorphism typical of the era. Such Sunday page strips, appearing in newspapers nationwide, established the foundational grammar of comics: recurring characters, panel borders, integrated text and image, and visual gags dependent on sequence. These serialized narratives were precursors to the comic book format that would follow decades later.
