Otto Auto and Clean Talking Dice
This strip follows Otto, a talking automobile, and his sidekick in a rapid-fire exchange about engine cylinders and dice games. The three-panel layout uses speech balloons and sound effects (RATTLE, CLICK) to convey action and dialogue simultaneously—visual techniques that became standard in newspaper comics. By 1920, daily comic strips had established the vocabulary of sequential art: recurring characters, panel-to-panel narrative progression, and lettering integrated with illustration. Otto Auto exemplifies the era when automobile humor dominated the funny pages, reflecting America's fascination with the motorcar.
