Our Boarding House

Created by Frank King and drawn by Ahern, *Our Boarding House* appeared in newspapers nationwide as a daily and Sunday comic strip. The strip followed the misadventures of Major Hoople, a garrulous boarding-house resident, and his landlady Mrs. Hoople amid a cast of lodgers and hangers-on. The strip's humor derived from physical comedy, verbal gags, and recurring character dynamics played across multiple panels. By the 1930s, strips like this had established the formal vocabulary of modern comics—speech balloons, sequential panels, and serialized narratives—that would directly shape the emerging comic book industry. Newspapers supplied the laboratory where visual storytelling evolved.
