Our Friend Mush and Other Boys

A Sunday newspaper comic strip following the misadventures of Mush and his companions. The four-panel sequence shows Mush caught in a domestic mishap—his mother chases him for breaking something, leading him to seek refuge outdoors where he encounters other neighborhood boys. The strip employs the visual conventions pioneered in early newspaper comics: multiple panels in sequence, speech balloons conveying dialogue and action, and a cast of recurring child characters. By 1916, such strips had become standard features in Sunday editions, establishing the narrative and visual grammar that would define comic strips and eventually the comic book medium itself.
