Out Our Way

A daily newspaper comic strip by J. R. Williams depicting working-class humor and domestic mishaps. This panel shows Joe Hunch exploiting a laundry service by hiding extra shirts in overall pockets to get them washed for free—a scheme the laundress quickly discovers. Williams's strip exemplifies the visual language that defined 1920s comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, clear character staging, and economic line work. *Out Our Way* ran for decades and influenced generations of cartoonists working in newspapers, where the daily and Sunday pages served as the foundational medium for comic art before the emergence of comic books.
