Outbursts of Everett True

This two-panel strip follows Everett True, an irascible protagonist who responds to social annoyances with exaggerated physical outbursts. In the top panel, True strikes a ticket agent at a theater box office; below, he attacks a man at the same counter while another patron remarks on his violence. The strip employs sequential narrative and dialogue balloons—visual conventions inherited from nineteenth-century broadsheets and refined by newspaper cartoonists. True became a popular daily and Sunday feature, one of many recurring-character strips that established the newspaper comic as a distinct form. The abbreviated, expressive linework and comedic timing through panel juxtaposition demonstrate techniques foundational to comic strip development in the early twentieth century.
