This two-panel strip exemplifies the visual conventions emerging in early newspaper comics. A waiter presents change to a diner, offering new dimes as coins; the second panel erupts into physical chaos when the diner, insulted at the meager tip, destroys the table and scatters dishes and food. The strip's title character became famous for explosive reactions to minor social annoyances. Recurring characters, sequential panels with speech balloons, and escalating physical comedy defined the daily comic strip format that preceded and shaped comic books. By 1907, artists had established the visual grammar—panel progression, facial expression, motion lines—that would become foundational to the medium.
