Outbursts of Everett True

A two-panel gag strip following Everett True, an ill-tempered everyman character. In the first panel, True proposes to friends that they visit a convention hall to see a notable person—provided the trip seems worthwhile. The second panel delivers the punchline: True and his companions arrive at the Convention Hall only to slip on the icy steps outside, tumbling in comic disarray. The strip employs the visual shorthand of early newspaper comics: sequential panels, speech balloons, exaggerated expressions, and physical comedy. Everett True was one of the earliest recurring characters in American comic strips, pioneering the format that newspapers used to build daily readership and that eventually evolved into the comic book industry.
