Outbursts of Everett True

A Sunday strip following the irascible Everett True through two episodes of social friction. In the first panel, True objects to a ballot box solicitation; in the second, he punches a collector attempting to add a black eye to his souvenir collection. The strip employs the visual vocabulary of early newspaper comics—sequential panels, speech balloons, and a recurring protagonist—that emerged from the daily and Sunday pages of the 1900s. Artist Ben Batsford developed True as a vehicle for depicting everyday annoyances and social awkwardness through physical comedy, a formula that proved popular with newspaper readers and helped establish the comic strip as a distinct medium distinct from political cartoons and illustration.
