Outbursts of Everett True

A two-panel Sunday strip following Everett True, an irascible protagonist who responds to social indignities with immediate, exaggerated violence. In the top panel, a lodge member instructs True to step forward for initiation; in the bottom, True erupts, striking his tormentors with explosive force. The strip's visual grammar—sequential panels, speech balloons, and action lines indicating movement—became foundational to comic strip language. Artist Ben Batsford's crude, energetic linework and True's recurring role as a working-class rebel made this feature a popular fixture in American newspapers during the early twentieth century, establishing the prototype for the modern comic strip format.
