Here he upbraids a diner for the audible slurping of soup, then sardonically suggests an even cruder alternative: ramming one's mug directly into the bowl. The humor relies on True's exaggerated outrage and the absurdist logic of his retorts. Running from 1905 to 1927, *Everett True* was among the first strips to feature a recurring protagonist whose reactions to everyday social irritations drove the narrative. Artist James Swinnerton helped pioneer the visual conventions of newspaper comics—bordered panels, speech balloons, and economical line work—that became foundational to the emerging medium.
