Outbursts of Everett True
A single-panel comic featuring the irascible Everett True, a recurring character known for his cantankerous responses to social irritants. Here, True reads an angry letter from a creditor threatening legal action if he continues spending on postcards and travel instead of paying debts. True's exasperated expression and emphatic gesture—smoke literally streaming from his nose—convey his indignation at the unsolicited advice. The strip exemplifies the visual shorthand that newspaper comics pioneered: expressive caricature, speech balloons for dialogue, and physical comedy that could be grasped instantly. Such dailies and Sunday pages formed the foundation of American comic art, establishing conventions that cartooning would build upon for generations.
