Polly and Her Pals — Daily Strip

Cliff Sterrett's *Polly and Her Pals* (1912–1958) follows rotund, sharp-tongued 'Ma' Paw and the family through domestic comic misadventures. In this four-panel daily, Ma frets that their club reception will fail when the men retreat to the locker room; she proposes inviting a 'Prince Charming' to entertain the ladies — then Paw cheerfully volunteers himself, only to be deflated with 'Wot good are YOU?' His comeback: 'I'm a good listener.' Sterrett's fluid ink line, expressive figures, and crisp balloon lettering represent the daily newspaper strip at its formal peak — these syndicated pages, circulated nationwide from the 1910s onward, were the direct precursors to the comic book, establishing the panel grid, recurring cast, and sequential visual grammar that defined the medium.
