Polly and Her Pals — Daily Strip

Cliff Sterrett launched *Polly and Her Pals* in 1912, making it one of the longest-running family comedy strips in American newspaper history. This daily strip follows Pa receiving a domestic-advice seeker named Violet, whose punch line — her husband left thirty years ago and she's never seen him since, so Pa suggests a legal separation — lands with deadpan absurdity across four tight panels. Sterrett's linework here is relatively restrained compared to his later Cubist-inflected Sunday pages, but the rhythm is crisp: setup, escalation, reversal, reaction. Newspaper dailies like this one, syndicated nationally and collected into early reprint booklets, directly seeded the comic book format — recurring characters, sequential panels, speech balloons — that would crystallize as a distinct medium by the 1930s.
