Polly and Her Pals — PO350105

This four-panel daily strip by Cliff Sterrett follows "Unk," a rotund, bowler-hatted figure, bursting free after three weeks of quarantine — hat flying, cane swinging, shouting "Yip — Whoopee!" A domestic figure announces supper while a woman frets he won't return until all hours. The final panel shows Unk beatifically illuminated, apparently in a tavern. Sterrett launched *Polly and Her Pals* in 1912 for King Features; it ran until 1958. Though nominally about Polly, Unk (her father Paw) became the strip's comic engine. Sterrett's draftsmanship grew increasingly bold — angular Cubist backgrounds, expressive silhouettes — making the strip a touchstone for cartoonists studying how a daily newspaper strip could become genuinely experimental visual art.
