Radio Ralf

Radio Ralf follows the adventures of a young character navigating early broadcast entertainment. In this strip, Ralf visits Station KREX, where an announcer promises entertainment from Mr. Hipp O'Dray. A guest then poses a riddle about the difference between a radio fan and an audience hearing a live band play Dixie—answered with the punchline that radio listeners "tune to a tune" while others "wave to a tune." The strip employs the visual vocabulary emerging in 1920s newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring characters, and sight gags. Jack Wilson's work appears during the medium's foundational period, when Sunday pages and daily strips were establishing the formal and narrative conventions that would define American comics for decades.
