Radio Ralf
This four-panel strip follows Ralf's attempt to receive a radio message on his wristwatch—an absurd premise played for laughs. The gag escalates across panels: Ralf claims the watch picks up broadcasts, his friend bets he cannot receive a message, Ralf insists he can (producing only noise), and finally suggests tuning in to stations as far as Shetland Islands. The strip employs the visual conventions emerging in 1920s newspaper comics: sequential panels with clear narrative progression, speech balloons advancing both plot and humor, and simple line work. Characters repeat across installments, establishing the recurring-cast model that would define the medium. Radio itself—a new consumer technology—grounds the humor in contemporary fascination with wireless transmission.
