Radio Ralf
Radio Ralf follows a scrappy boy character through a four-panel Sunday strip episode. The narrative hinges on wordplay and phonetic confusion: Ralf misunderstands "vaude-ville night" as "vault night," leading to physical comedy as he searches for a vault. By the final panel, he's stumbled into a department store, still pursuing the joke's logic. Jack Wilson's drawing style uses bold line work and dynamic postures to track motion across panels. The strip exemplifies how newspaper comics of the 1920s built humor from recurring characters and visual gags that could sustain multiple panels—techniques foundational to comic book storytelling. The sequential panel structure, speech balloons, and sight-gag payoff became the visual vocabulary comics inherited from their newspaper origins.
