Reg'lar Fellers

Gene Byrnes's *Reg'lar Fellers* follows a boy and his family through domestic situations solved by logic puzzles and wordplay. In this strip, a mother poses a math problem to test her son's thinking: if twelve ginger snaps arrived and he ate one, how many remain? The boy answers "eleven"—correct arithmetic, but the mother rejects it as lazy reasoning, demanding he "use your head." When he finally grasps the trick (the snaps have vanished entirely), she relents and gives him one anyway. The daily comic strip, appearing in newspapers nationwide, pioneered the recurring cast and visual pacing that would define the medium. Byrnes's clear linework and multi-panel layouts established conventions still used in comics today.
