Gene Byrnes's *Reg'lar Fellers* followed the daily misadventures of a group of neighborhood boys, their schemes and conflicts rendered in energetic ink lines and dense compositions. Here, Puddinhead's cucumber-growing project becomes the occasion for slapstick: one boy announces his horticultural failure while another attempts a rooftop shortcut, leading to collision and chaos across four panels. The strip exemplifies the visual vocabulary that newspaper comics had crystallized by the 1920s—sequential panels advancing narrative time, speech balloons conveying character voice, and recurring cast members whose personalities drove humor. Published six days a week in newspapers nationwide, such strips trained millions of readers in the grammar of sequential art that would define the comic book form.
