Sam arrives late with gifts, promises a lucrative business deal, then pitches a disastrous scheme involving a stolen ring—culminating in an explosion. The strip employs the visual vocabulary established by newspaper comics in the 1920s: sequential panels with action flowing left to right, speech balloons advancing dialogue and gags, and a recurring protagonist in various predicaments. By the late 1920s, strips like this appeared daily and Sunday in papers nationwide, establishing the narrative and visual strategies that would form the foundation of the comic book industry emerging in the 1930s.
