Salesman Sam
· October 20, 1930

A three-panel daily strip following Sam, an eager traveling salesman, and his recurring cast of customers and colleagues. The narrative unfolds across panels: Sam pitches a cleaning product to a skeptical customer, who initially refuses; Sam persists with enthusiasm; the customer finally agrees to try the product back at the office. The strip employs the visual conventions established in newspaper comics—sequential panels, speech balloons, expressive ink linework, and physical comedy—to build a simple commercial transaction into comic conflict. Newspaper strips like *Salesman Sam* supplied the visual and narrative templates that shaped early comic books, popularizing the panel-based storytelling format and character-driven humor that would define the medium.
