Salesman Sam
· November 12, 1930

A four-panel Sunday strip following Sam's pitch for Christmas shopping merchandise. The strip exemplifies 1920s-30s newspaper comic conventions: sequential panels advancing a single gag, speech balloons revealing character voice and plot, and recurring protagonist in domestic and commercial settings. Sam's exaggerated features and energetic posture drive the humor through visual slapstick and sales-pitch dialogue. Newspaper comics like this populated Sunday rotogravure sections nationwide, establishing the panel-based visual language that would define comic books. Artists developed standardized techniques for pacing, perspective, and character staging that became foundational to the medium's growth.
