Salesman Sam
A three-panel daily strip following Sam through workplace mishaps. Panel one shows Sam at night school, struggling with arithmetic homework. Middle panel depicts Sam consulting a superior about a general course requirement. The final panel reveals Sam's misguided attempt to secure an office position at a military school. The strip uses sequential art conventions—distinct rectangular panels, speech balloons, and visual gags dependent on reading left to right—that became foundational to comic narrative. Sam was a recurring character in the newspaper dailies of the 1920s–30s, when strips like this provided crucial training ground for the visual language later adopted by comic books: panel transitions, character continuity, and word-image integration.
