Sherlocko the Monk

A newspaper comic strip featuring a portly detective monk character and his rotund sidekick. The strip uses sequential panels with speech balloons to track a chase scene—the pair pursuing suspects across rooftops and through streets. The artwork employs heavy cross-hatching and exaggerated caricature typical of early newspaper comics. By 1912, strips like this appeared in Sunday papers and dailies nationwide, establishing the visual conventions that would define the medium: recurring characters, panel-to-panel narrative flow, and comic timing rendered through sequential art. Such strips formed the direct precursor to the comic book format that emerged two decades later.
