Simon Simple Goes Hunting and Bags a Lobster
· February 12, 1905

This Sunday strip follows the misadventures of Simon Simple, a hapless character whose overconfident hunting expedition yields unexpected results. The six-panel narrative uses sequential art to build comedic momentum: Simon boasts of his prowess, attempts to shoot game, and through a series of escalating mishaps involving explosives and chaos, inadvertently catches a lobster. The strip exemplifies early comic page conventions—multiple panels advancing a single gag, speech balloons carrying dialogue and reaction, and a large cast of characters reacting to the central character's folly. Comic strips of this era appeared in newspapers as Sunday features and daily installments, establishing the visual and narrative vocabulary that would define comic books: panel borders, expressive cartooning, and recurring characters whose familiar personalities drove reader engagement across consecutive publications.
