Smitty — The Surprised Parties

A classic newspaper comic strip scene in which Smitty, a young office boy, attempts to present stock certificates to his boss as a surprise party gift. The boss's entrance interrupts the gathered stockholders mid-surprise, their shocked expressions rendered in rapid sequential panels. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary developed by early comic artists: overlapping figures to show depth and action, speech balloons anchored to speakers, and panel-to-panel narrative progression. Smitty was among the daily strips that established recurring characters and situations as foundational to the medium, predating the assembled comic book collections that would later become standard.
