Smitty
· Sunday, November 8, 1936

A street-gang adventure strip centered on a group of neighborhood kids engaged in playground games and schemes. The narrative follows a baseball game interrupted by rival gangs, escalating into physical conflict before resolution through reconciliation. The strip employs the standard visual vocabulary of 1930s comics: multi-panel grids, speech balloons, sequential action broken across panels to convey motion and consequence. Smitty and his companions recur as stock characters—the wise-guy, the follower, the mediator—allowing readers to track familiar personalities across episodic plots. Newspaper Sunday pages like this one provided the commercial foundation for comic book development, establishing the formal language that cartoonists would adapt into the bound anthology format emerging in the mid-1930s.
