Smitty

A daily and Sunday strip following the misadventures of Smitty, a office boy, and his younger brother Herby. The strip uses the visual conventions established by earlier cartoonists: bordered rectangular panels, speech balloons for dialogue, and recurring characters in episodic gags. In this sequence, Smitty's boss plans a tropical vacation while Herby listens eagerly; the strip then cuts to Herby regaling other children with colorful descriptions of exotic locations—bowls, arrows, sharks, pirates, wild animals. The humor turns on the gap between adult travel fantasies and a child's imagination run wild. Such newspaper strips were the direct precursor to comic books, establishing the panel-based narrative structure and character-driven humor that defined the medium.
