Smitty — Pennies from Heaven

A daily newspaper strip following the misadventures of Smitty, a mischievous office boy. Here, Smitty and his friend Golly plot to slice "think umber real natives" by sailing a small boat, unaware that those they're watching are actually planning to observe them for pennies. The strip employs the visual vocabulary standard to 1930s comics: rectangular panels arranged left-to-right, speech balloons carrying dialogue, and sequential action that builds a joke across frames. Smitty strips appeared in newspapers nationwide, part of the daily comic page ecosystem that established cartooning as America's dominant form of visual storytelling before the comic book industry emerged.
