Smitty — The Payoff
· Early 1930s

This strip follows Smitty, a young office boy, through a typical workday of comic misadventure. The narrative unfolds across five panels using the visual conventions established in newspaper comics: speech balloons, sequential panel layout, and recurring characters in a continuing workplace setting. Each panel builds on the previous one, showing Smitty greeting his boss, running an errand, encountering various obstacles, and finally receiving his meager weekly wage. The clean linework and simple compositions are characteristic of the dailies that dominated American newspapers in the 1920s–30s, when comic strips served as the primary source of visual storytelling and established the grammar of panels, balloons, and timing that would define the comic book medium.
