Smitty — His Finish

The narrative unfolds left to right: Smitty spots a little papoose in an arid landscape; he asks a bear what it eats, receiving a grim answer about stolen food; Smitty mentions the papoose steals food too; the final panel shows Smitty running at full speed, determined to "keel him." The artist uses sequential panels with speech balloons to advance plot and gag simultaneously—a technique fundamental to newspaper comic strips that emerged in the early 20th century.
