Soosie the Shopper

Four panels follow Soosie and her companion Oswald past a men's clothing store window, where she spots wide-legged trousers and immediately demands the fullest pair in stock. A baffled salesman obliges; Soosie wraps the enormous plaid fabric around herself and returns home having cut two skirts from a single pair of pants — Oswald's bewilderment is the punchline. Distributed by U.P.C. News Service, the strip belongs to the daily newspaper comic tradition that directly seeded the comic-book form: syndicates like U.P.C. packaged recurring characters, standardized the horizontal multi-panel layout, and normalized speech balloons as narrative engine. These syndicated dailies, later reprinted in collected pamphlets, gave the nascent comic book both its visual grammar and its commercial model.
